The Real Cost of Wind Energy Predictions

Hand held MeteoWind anemometer uses highly accurate elliptical cup design.

Four important things you need to know before doing a wind study:

  1. Choose a well-tested and accurate wind sensor with 1 % or better accuracy (3 % to 5 % error is standard for most weather stations).
3 % error may lead to 10% loss in income and 5 % anemometer error to a loss of 1/6th of your income.

  2. Do not confuse sensor resolution with accuracy. Some manufacturer’s only state anemometer resolution which has no relevance to accuracy.

  3. Always record air temperature and wind direction (if possible air pressure and humidity). Omitting these can cut another 1/6th out of your profits!
Air density plays a large role in how much electricity you can produce and is affected by air temperature, height above sea level, atmospheric pressure and humidity. It’s not all about anemometer accuracy!

  4. Do not use meteorological air pressure in weather reports and forecasts since it is not your real barometric air pressure. See our Equivalent sea-level pressure calculator to see the difference. Know your height above sea level.

  5. Follow anemometer placement rules and contact us if you have questions.
