As silent wars are fought by embargoes and computer viruses to disrupt economies and destabilize governments, collateral economic damage due to weather events has become a weapon of war. Governments are staring to implement bans on weather data export and requiring more and more that foreign weather services maintain weather data infrastructure within their borders.

In the future, detailed weather data will become sensitive information for many countries. This will pose a significant challenge to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in maintaining accurate climatology information, as raw meteorological data and their metadata may become a controlled commodity.

SENSOR DONATION TO ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH

To thank world-wide environmental researchers for their efforts in the fight against accelerated global warming, BARANI DESIGN Technologies is planning to donate 100 helical MeteoShield® Professional solar radiation shields, valued at 20,000 Eur, to research organizations. Interested parties should contact BARANI DESIGN Technologies directly to secure their part of this sensor donation package. Research organizations can also sign up at the World Meteorological Exhibition on June 5, 6, 7 at stand 6020, which will be held in Hall 4 of Palexpo in Geneva, Switzerland.

CO2 = profits; water vapor = climate change

Why is the most significant greenhouse gas water vapor and not CO2?

Water vapor is not officially considered to be a cause of man-made global warming because it is abundant and CO2 is much more convenient to measure, regulate and tax. The fact that water vapor does not persist in the atmosphere for more than a few days, makes its concentrations highly variable and harder to quantify on a global scale without good quality weather networks everywhere. Its concentrations can reach 100 times that of CO2 and its ability to trap heat is double. Additionally, fog and clouds reflect and absorb immense amounts of incoming solar radiation and moderate climatic temperatures. The water cycle reduces temperature extremes and redistributes heat throughout earth’s climates.
