Urban Weather Station - MeteoHelix in Stockholm Sweden

SensCity, one of the pioneers of Smart-City and Resilient-City climate monitoring has chosen to work with the highest quality urban climate monitoring sensors the market has to offer. Choosing to install the BARANI DESIGN MeteoHelix IoT Pro, MeteoWind IoT Pro and MeteoRain sensors for urban climate monitoring in Stockholm, Sweden on street lamps was by no means a coincidence.

Based on World Meteorological Organization (WMO) verified technologies in combination with IoT wireless data transmission, these sensors not only offer the highest levels of precision but also unparalleled ease of installation. Being solar powered and requiring no wires to connect, their installations on busy urban streets are quick and thus cost-effective.

Other sensors in use by SensCity include the MeteoAG which offers the expanded capability for agricultural monitoring of soil moisture, soil temperature, and leaf wetness.

Can LoRaWAN Networks Transform the Indian Meteorological Department into a World Leader in the Fight Against Global Warming?

Advantages of LoRaWAN Star-on-Star vs. LTE, GSM, NB-IoT, CAT-M1 and others:

  • Extend wireless network coverage 10+ km past existing LTE, GSM, NB-IoT, CAT-M1 coverage with LoRaWAN LTE gateways

  • LoRaWAN gateway affordability ensures deployment of double and triple-redundant wireless networks affordably due to its Star-on-Star approach vs. mesh networking.

  • Meteorological sensor nodes communicate with multiple gateways, ensuring reliability of wireless data transmission and interference resistance. In case of a gateway failure, data is automatically rerouted via other gateways.

  • LoRaWAN networks allow the addition of unlimited nodes without rebuilding the wireless infrastructure.

  • LoRaWAN networks naturally permit network expansion and do not require trained personnel in the field to support network operation since gateways act as only message forwarders (data pass-through) and sensor nodes do not join/pair with gateways, but directly with the application running at the Met Department.

What Benefits Does IoT Bring to the World of Meteorology?

Smart-city weather station for Resilient-cities initiatives

Smart-city weather station for Resilient-cities initiatives

Due to IoT, the cost of wireless sensor systems and meteorological weather stations has come down slightly for the following reasons:

  1. Wireless modem costs have been reduced.

  2. Power consumption of wireless data transmission has been reduced creating a chain reaction with the cost benefits of smaller electronics, smaller battery and smaller solar panel requirements.

  3. What has not changed is the know-how required to produce high quality measurements. This know-how and its attention to detail from years of R&D differentiates the “random-number generators” from real measurement systems.

Despite the hype of big data, AI and advanced statistical methods, the early adopters of low-cost weather stations and meteorological sensors from most startup companies and agricultural sensor manufacturers have been, for the most part, dissapointed.

A second wave of IoT sensor adoption is upon us as researchers, smart-city managers and resilient-city initiatives are beginning to replace the first wave of low-cost meteorological sensors. High quality professional meteorological sensors are being introduced with the goal of maintaining long-term measurement stability in all weather conditions. After all, global warming is happening on a scale of about 0.01 °C (0,018 °F) per year, which is deeply withing the noise of short-term measurement. Thus long-term stability of measurement is critical to creating accurate climatic data sets.

New technologies on the forefront of professional IoT sensors include the MeteoHelix® IoT Pro micro-weather stations which are designed based on years of measurement experience of BARANI DESIGN Technologies.
