Which is more accurate: Siphon or a tipping bucket rain gauge?

Siphon-equipped tipping-bucket gauges can reduce high-intensity dynamic undercatch by delivering a more stable, calibratable flow to the bucket, but this comes with tradeoffs. In short storms (<1hr), the siphon’s extra stored water remains unemptied, leading to false event-boundary errors and doubling evaporation losses. Since siphon dosing is not aligned with rain intensity in terms of timing and flow rate, it significantly distorts rain-rate measurements and produces delayed, bursty “pseudo-intensities”.
